The challenge

CVS wanted a training video that would help store colleagues confidently recommend its growing portfolio of private brands. But the assignment quickly grew beyond product education. The film also needed to explain sourcing, quality testing, packaging redesigns, and the rigorous standards behind every product — all while complying with strict legal constraints around product claims and comparisons.

We needed a way to connect dozens of mandatory talking points into a single story that employees would actually want to follow.

The big idea

What if the training video was framed as an investigative report? Inspired by popular long-form podcasts and YouTube deep dives, we created a fictional journalist determined to answer one question: Do CVS Store Brands really deliver the same quality and value as the national brands?

Bringing it to life

We built the story through reporting. We partnered with the client to identify subject matter experts across the organization, conducted pre-interviews to uncover the strongest stories and insights, and organized those conversations into a narrative before cameras ever rolled.

During production, our goal was to capture authentic conversations rather than polished corporate sound bites. Subject matter experts were encouraged to speak naturally about their work, while the journalist’s scripted narration connected those conversations into a cohesive story — clarifying complex ideas, reinforcing key takeaways, and incorporating the precise language required for legal compliance.

I remained involved throughout production, collaborating on set with the director and on-screen journalist to ensure every interview captured the moments needed to support the investigation. During post-production, I worked closely with the editing team to refine the narration and shape the story into a clear, engaging final film.

The Film

The finished film combined documentary storytelling, expert interviews, and scripted narration into a single learning experience that transformed mandatory training into an engaging story.

Beyond the film

The film became the foundation for a broader suite of training materials. One extension was this leave-behind booklet, which adapted the video’s messaging into a practical reference colleagues could use after the training ended.
